Will There Be Ducklings?

The excitement is starting to grow. Over the fence at the back of the garden there is another pond, smaller than ours, and more covered, which we call “the swamp”. For nearly a week now Mr and Mrs de Wilde-Mallard have not moved from either our pond or the swamp. He does not fly off when I go to the composter. They are there all day.

In the past I got the impression that Mrs wears the metaphorical trousers in their relationship, because he was always following her around. Now he can be seen swimming around on his own, mildly forlorn. He might even take up smoking and pacing back and forth. If I go down to plughole corner, he can be seen swimming on the swamp. Previously he would have flown off, but I can get to within ten metres now. Occasionally when I am there, I hear an additional plop as the Mrs joins him for a swim.

I think that she is nesting, the 28 days are in play. So, in three weeks we may have ducklings on our pond and in the swamp.

This would be most excellent…
