Researching the Arrival of Buddhism in the UK

I have just spent several hours researching various characters associated with the arrival of Buddhism to the UK and the West. Max Mueller and Thomas Rhys Davids had a big hand in this as did Christmas Humphreys. You can see that after the death of her husband Caroline Augusta Foley Rhys Davids carried on this work on the Pali in which she was a scholar. She must have met G.P.Malalasekera.

I got quite a buzz following trails and will revisit in due course.

The wife’s mother was a pen-pal of the daughter of G.P.Malalasekera. Joan was from a very modest background in Birmingham, and she was writing to an “ambassador’s” daughter. After her mother’s death my wife exchanges letters in her mother’s place. We met the pen-pal in Vienna a few months after the removal of my cancer and a part of my colon, in 2015.

When I was researching my Bakula dream, I met a Theravada monk who had tended to Christmas in his latter days.

It is a small world….
