I read a truly staggering article this morning referring to a Public Health England survey. In 2017-18 7.3 million people were prescribed antidepressants and this was on an upward trend. The Guardian this morning had an article saying that the prescription of antidepressant and anti-anxiety medication has risen by six percent since the start of the pandemic.
That means that around a quarter, one in four, of the adult population gets prescriptions!!
I knew the number was big and growing, but I am surprised.
That means if you are an adult in England, you almost certainly know someone who is being medicated. You may be completely unaware, that they are being medicated. If you keep your own medication secret, then your friends may be unaware that you are being medicated. It is possible that “both” of you are being secretly medicated and unaware of the shared situation.
It shows that there is a whole lot of fear, and unhappiness.
When the proportion gets this high it suggests that the way we are living our lives simply does not work for a whole swathe of society.
What do we do continue to prescribe pills or change the way we live our lives?
Does this suggest we need a complete reorientation?
