Japanese Embassy – Patent – Dream 14-07-2021

Here is this morning’s dream.

In my hands I have a patent application on paper. I am walking through the corridors of the London office of the Intellectual Property Office. There are smartly dressed people everywhere. I enter a room where one can file patent applications by hand and on paper. There is a smartly dressed young woman sat behind a desk. I explain that I want to submit an application but because I am not a lawyer and am representing my own intellectual property nobody is taking me seriously. She asks a little of my background. She then writes on a piece of card a long code beginning with the letter K. She hands this to me and suggests that I go to the Whitehall office and hand them this code. This code means that they will take me more seriously. I thank her and leave her office. Once more I am walking down the corridor.

At the end of the corridor, I open a door, and this leads me into the reception area of the Japanese Embassy. There are several men and women on the welcome desk. They seem surprised to see me appearing in their foyer.  A man in his thirties in an old-style suit says hello and asks me to explain how I got there. I say that I was trying to file a patent application. He asks on what subjects. I say “quantum optics and entangled photon pairs” his ears prick up. He says that this is something we in Japan are very interested in. From beneath the counter, he pulls out an old-style document holder briefcase. He intimates that they would be helpful if my application was filed in Japan. Hinting that they would bear the costs of translating the application into Japanese. He wants me to hand him the application to put in the briefcase.

I briefly come to and make a mental note of the dream. I then drift back off.

In the dream I can now see a Japanese translation of my patent application. Each paragraph and each diagram have a very light violet coloured stamp of two kanji, two Japanese characters. The kanji are tiny but easily visible because they are glowing somewhat.

I awake thinking that is weird, because it all seemed so very realistic.

Patents in Welsh and Key Man Insurance

Back in 2017-2018 I had the notion to submit a patent application in Welsh at the IPO. It is legally possible to do so BUT you also have to do it in English as well, it would get translated. Any strategic advantage of having a largely undecipherable patent was eroded. It was tremendous fun finding all this out and all the Patent Attorneys, from the land of my fathers, were helpful. It was kind of a novel idea to be the first ever patent application in Welsh.

I was tinkering with the idea of doing a start-up. I even founded a shell company “Eigenoptics” and was in discussion with various Photonics Clusters: Berlin, Holland and Brittany. I had an invite to go to a VC event in Berlin and had arranged to meet some people whilst there. I even had my tickets and room booked. People this side of the channel were way more helpful than in blighty.

I started sketching out the components for a business plan. When this happened before the VCs wanted key man insurance for the founders. They wanted about £2million cover if one of us popped our clogs. Because of my previous suicidal ideation my insurance was more expensive, and it was the start of problems with the CEO. He read my health disclosure, back in 2000, which he should not have done.

I had a T3 colon tumour removed in July 2015.

When I asked for quotes for life insurance, I had some interesting responses.

“No way we will insure you this close to your cancer.”

“We will insure you but for £2million cover we want £65,000 per annum. If you make it out to year seven the premium will drop to around £10,000.”

Pretty weird talking to people making bets on you not carking it.

There it was one big fat juicy showstopper.

I pulled out of the VC event and never went to Berlin. I dissolved the company.

Thematically the dreams I published earlier today are linked to what was going on, on the physical plane.

Weird re-visiting that space.

Better do the ashram thing instead.

Pharma and Pandemic

Covid : Moderna devrait gagner 19 milliards de dollars avec son vaccin cette année

La biotech américaine table désormais sur des revenus de 19,2 milliards de dollars contre 18,4 milliards annoncés précédemment grâce à son vaccin ARN.

Pfizer forecasts $26bn from annual sales of Covid-19 vaccine

Vaccine will generate 73% more than forecast based on contracts signed until mid-April

The US drugmaker Pfizer has smashed its sales forecasts and now expects to bring in $26bn (£19bn) of revenue from its Covid-19 vaccine this year, with its soaraway product accounting for more than a third of the company’s annual income.

The company had expected the vaccine to bring in $15bn over the course of 2021, and the 73% increase in expected revenues to $26bn is still likely to be an underestimate as it counts only orders received by the middle of April and Pfizer is expected to sign more multibillion dollar supply contracts.

‘Ill-judged’ bonus hike for AstraZeneca boss prompts investor anger

Advisory groups ask shareholders to oppose bid to raise Pascal Soriot’s maximum share bonus to 650% of £1.3m basic pay.

AstraZeneca is facing mounting opposition over its plans to award its chief executive, Pascal Soriot, a big increase in bonuses, with three investor advisory groups calling on shareholders to vote against the policy.

Pirc, Glass Lewis and Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) have all flagged concerns over moves to raise the maximum share bonus Soriot can receive under a long-term plan from 550% of his £1.3m base salary to 650%. AZ also plans to hoist Soriot’s maximum annual bonus to 250% of salary from 200%, depending on performance targets being hit.

EU ‘ready to discuss’ COVID vaccine patent waiver as drugmakers push back.

The European Union is willing to discuss a proposal to waive intellectual property rights for COVID-19 vaccines, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday, as drugmakers fought their ground as their share prices tumbled.

U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday voiced support for a waiver in a sharp reversal of the U.S. position, and his top trade negotiator, Katherine Tai, swiftly backed negotiations at the World Trade Organization.

Drugmakers say Biden misguided over vaccine patent waiver

Drugmakers on Thursday said U.S. President Joe Biden’s support for waiving patents of COVID-19 vaccines could disrupt a fragile supply chain and that rich countries should instead share more generously with the developing world.

Biden on Wednesday threw his support behind waiving intellectual property rights for COVID-19 vaccines, angering research-based pharmaceutical companies.

Gilead raises 2020 profit forecast on remdesivir strength

Gilead Sciences raised its full-year profit forecast on Monday, as a recent resurgence in Covid-19 cases boosted demand for its Covid-19 treatment, remdesivir.

The level of new Covid-19 cases in the U.S. is starting to rise again, amidst the slow rollout of vaccine. Experts say the country should expect another surge in mid-January due to holiday gatherings.

The antiviral, currently authorized to treat Covid-19 patients across the world, was one of the drugs used to treat U.S. President Donald Trump’s coronavirus infection.

Gilead said it was raising its total product sales forecast to the range of $24.30 billion to $24.35 billion, reflecting increased sales of remdesivir.

Echoes or Residual Fate?

I have a notion that sometimes a life event of some significance has an echo a number of years later. That echo may be a reminder of the previous event and perhaps the need to recapitulate it or it may be an indicator of residual fate, some stuff that must get done in a given lifetime. It is difficult to differentiate between these two themes. The only real indicator is the relative permanence. The echo will fade faster than residual fate.

If for example, we were fated to meet then that fate would keep presenting until we did. If we had learning to do together, the universe would bring us together, whether we liked it or not.

It is easy to get into a mind spin considering lost opportunities, squandered fate and the like.

My dream yesterday is pointing me back to a particular time of life. The time when I was exploring spirituality. At the time I was a can of Red Stripe and a spliff, {several} sort of guy. What I noted in many of the so-called spirituality gigs was that there were a lot of “grey hairs” as in people. The gatherings were conducted, smoke free, with a cup of tea and a cucumber sandwich. Much like high tea at a boarding school or at the church centre after service. Others were obsessed with vegetarianism and healthy eating. There was a lot of polite small talk and it seemed to me a holier than thou mentality. I was in my thirties. I thought to myself; “If you guys are recruiting and trying to get people to join your ageing organisation, this is not the way to do it, time-warp city Arizona.” Some tried to evangelize vegetarianism to me. This didn’t impress the then hardcore vegan.

Unless you are really perverted the attitude of a boarding school Matron all name tags in underpants etc. is not overly attractive. Grannies telling you how to behave isn’t alluring.

And now I am that age myself.

What do I see? I see the “youth” apparently obsessed with their ‘phones and their image. If I was thirty years younger, I might even be sending dick picks to potential girlfriends. I too have become a dinosaur.

I have postulated that my recent patent application is little more than an echo of events 20 years previous. In a similar way the post of Toltec things yesterday is contemporary of that ancient phase space too.

Everybody has to gain life experience to learn and maybe it is only when one has messed up a sufficient number of times that one really turns towards learning. So maybe spirituality is a property of age? I hope not.

If I was cynical, I could get someone to write some spirituality app. and then flog it on the internet.

The question is will that phase space re-phase into an echo or actual residual fate, work to do before I shuffle of the mortal coil and pop my clogs, kick the bucket etc.

Quantum Optics Patent Fee Paid

Partly spurred on by yesterday’s “door” dream I have just been online at the Intellectual Property Office to request a substantive examination of my patent application and pay the £160 fee.

It might seem a little strange as juxtaposition to some of the other content on this blog.

It is a bit like buying a lottery ticket.

I can’t withdraw my request, so I just have to sit back and see what happens. It will make me smile if it gets granted. Some old geezer writing quantum optics patents in his shed in Brittany gets a patent granted at the UK patent office.

We have an attic which I could turn into a laser lab.

Yesterday afternoon was DIY mania, I am a bit of a flat pack diva. We were able to pick up our IKEA order at a local supermarket. There is just a tiny bit of flooring to do and the kitchen is finished bar some glossing.

Next step is taking off the door in the hall and removing 6mm off the bottom. Then it is back to flooring frenzy.

So, fingers crossed, let’s see what the dudes at Newport think…

A brief look at vaccines

One of the patent applications from the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products refers to a Sinopharm vaccine grown in Vero cells. These cells originate from the kidneys of African Green Monkeys. If you are really interested there is a Vaccine Tracker Web Site here.

If you nose around a bit Astra Zeneca are involved in production of the Sputnik V vaccine!

There are four types, mRNA, inactivated virus, other adenoviral vectors and protein fragments. There are some DNA based vaccines in the pipeline. The adenovirus vectors are also, if I understand it, monkey ones.

This means that if you are a strict vegan, you did not ought to get vaccinated with these things. OK the Vero cells were harvested a long time ago. Vero “means” green kidney.

It looks like there are several current players, China, Russia, USA, UK, Germany and India. There is assistance from Abu Dhabi, South America, South Africa. Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is involved with the Oxford-Astra Zeneca vaccine. Wuhan plays a role in two of the Chinese products.

What happens if the patent applications get granted?

Will the vaccine intellectual property wars start?

I think one thing is certain coronavirus vaccines are big business. A simple estimate, 7 billion times 2 is 14 billion at 10 bucks a shot, is a lot of cash. There is a big market. And if the virus mutates enough there is a need for a new vaccine every year!

First to market is not always the best strategy.

If one was a conspiracy theorist there is plenty to speculate on. I am not one of these. One could see how various theories could emerge. I wonder was the patent application previous for the bat-derived vaccine a part of the cause of the eating bats theory?

I’ll make a prediction, the commercial battleground for vaccines is only just starting to hot up, it will get very “hot”. There will be claim and counter claim.

I suspect that the tried and tested inactivated virus method is not really patentable. I don’t know enough to comment on the others. What happens when a country grants a patent locally? It means that the market is protected in that country. The World Patent Office may not concur with the local ones.

It could get messy…

I have often speculated that Intellectual Property will become a part of what is referred to as Grey Warfare.

A Day of Contrasts

Not long done my sous chef thing for dinner. I had to open a new 400g bag of garam masala from my secret spice stash. yummy smell.  Some things easily available in the UK are harder to find here but thanks to a 100 euro order on amazon I managed to replenish my spice stash a while back. I have kilner jar after kilner jar of the stuff.  In an hour or so I will rattle up a jalfrezi.

We heard that our wood burner is due for delivery next week so it has been all hands to the pump to get the wall ready. I have been filling it and today hand sanding it. I looked a little like a ghost albeit with sweat trickles. It is hard manual labour and then I looked up this on the internet:

My patent application just got published…a day of contrasts..

From the deep pungent brown garam masala to the ghostly white sandings off the wall. I kept imaging aboriginal body paint and didgeridoos whilst I was sanding. I can almost hear them now.

So let us add another contrast:

One can see that the flow is actually a series of discrete events….blending into each other, each a snapshot of the fleeting yet eternal now.

Something Irreversible

In a few days’ time something irreversible, irrevocable, will happen. My patent application will get published and my home address here in France will be linked with that patent application. It will end up on Google patents and in all the patent databases around the world…hell it might even get translated into Chinese.

It is kind of strange, at the very beginning of the pandemic I downloaded the patent application for remdesivir and briefly considered buying some shares in the company which makes it. It seemed to me that an antiviral agent would sooner or later be shown to be part of the treatment. It is a very broad application and whoever put it together did a good job of covering all bases.

I have the odd feeling of jungle drums sounding today, in London. I must stop eating those magic mushrooms…

There is nothing I can do now…whatever is going to happen {if anything} is in play.

Then the next decision is do I bung another 150 quid at it or not. To write a decent application a good firm of attorneys will charge something like five grand.  I did it myself, sat here at this desk on my vintage windows 7 machine, which I bought from an IT refurbishment outfit for 150 quid donkey’s years ago.

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future’s not ours, to see

Unstoppable Now

Well I have just received a letter from the Intellectual Property Office in South Wales. The preparations for the publication of my patent application are complete and it will be published on 25th November. I have an “A” designated GB publication number. That publication makes for the record and it will start to have an online footprint which is indelible. It is a self-written application without any legal input and filed under my home address, a small village in rural Brittany. There is no corporate or commercial entity associated, and I am without affiliation, an amateur application by an eccentric. The address of this house will be linked to that application, for ever.

Whether this is but a tiny, tiny ripple or is causative of something more substantive, remains to be seen.

I have a little over six months to pay the ~£150 for substantive examination, if I don’t do this the IPO will assume it to be withdrawn.

I know that there is massive worldwide interest in quantum optics patents, someone will read it, if only the title and the abstract. I will appear as a data entry in some spread sheets about patents, this one will be down as filed in France, so it will add to the French tally of patent applications in this area.

I had considered filing the patent in Welsh, but it was pretty complicated so to do:

“Apparatus to Produce Entangled Photon Pairs”

“Cyfarpar i gynhyrchu parau ffoton”

I can’t stop it now, it is unstoppable.

Here is this morning’s dream. Last night we watched Dragons’ Den on TV and I had another dream of its ilk earlier in the night which I cannot recall.

I arrive at some swanky offices in London and go into reception. It is plush and modern with a glass fronted airy atrium. The security guards at the desk take my name and give me a badge to wear. They direct me to a holding area / outer office. I am suited and booted but with no tie.

The PA greets me. In the holding area there is another man sat. He is clutching documentation and a tablet computer. I tell the lady, who is smartly dressed, that I am here for a 10 o’clock appointment. It is 9:24AM. The other guy is about to go “in”. Knowing that I am, as per usual, early I ask the PA how the timing and schedule is going. “Is it Swiss?”, I ask. She says, “not quite” with a wink. So, I say that I will pop out for a coffee and come back. She points me in the direction of the canteen. I say I would rather go to a coffee shop, she is unhappy about this as it threatens her scheduling. She doubts I will be back on time.

I head off into town and find a coffee shop. I sit at one table and am joined by three other people. They do not notice me and are deep in heated discussion. I can see that they have a design for a beam steering column to be used in conjunction with a microscope. They are discussing a possible patent application. The younger one is talking the others through the design drawings which are in clear view on the table.

Just as they are about to leave, I say that the design looks OK but that is doesn’t look all that novel to me. Anyone “skilled in the art” might have come up with it, they need to find a better angle or way of doing it. They are a bit shocked.

I look down at my watch it is 9:55AM. I had better leg it back. I get in my car and drive fast through the traffic back to the office.

As I arrive the other guy is coming “out”, clutching his documents. I wish him luck.

I sit in a chair close to the open door which leads to the inner office it is now 10:02AM.

Through the ajar door one of the posh geezers says that I had better come in. In the room there are a number of men (~4-5) dressed in expensive suits and “Rolex” type watches. They are having their coffee refreshed. The first man ushers me towards some chairs facing the men whom I know to be rich VC types. I say that I would prefer to stand. Which I do facing the semi-circle of investors. I have no documentation or IT. Just me. I am very relaxed.

The PA leaves the room and one of the men there says that I should tell them about myself.

I start off on the cancer and tutorial story. I can sense their eyes glazing over and the thought “time waster” starting to manifest. One says, “That explains why we haven’t heard anything from you or about you!”

I then say that I have also been looking at and delving into patents. I know a patentable idea when I see one and I have a couple sketched out. This sparks their interest a little more. The tone and the mood in the room suddenly changes. One of them who is the lead turns to another and mutters something under his breath. I have their attention now.

At that point I start engaging them in a very relaxed manner. “What kinds of investment opportunities are you (plural) looking for? “

Because thy have been sat all morning listening, they welcome the chance to speak for a bit, so they begin.

The dream ends.
